#62 Lemonade Time

Updated: Jul 3, 2022

There's a place about an hour away from Zion called Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. This is where Oliver and I spent the day.

The Sanctuary is on acres and acres and acres and Kanab Canyon is part of it, so it is worth the drive around the sanctuary just for the views.

But we came to take a special little dog out for an afternoon of joyriding in our Jeep.

BFAC has a program where you can volunteer anywhere in the sanctuary. You can clean out the pig pens, you can socialize with the parrots, you can take the bunnies home for a sleepover...and you can take an adoptable dog out for an afternoon of fun.

We got to the Sanctuary earlier than expected, and found out that we were not able to go from animal house to animal house due to their regulations. So we drove the giant loop of the proprerty and found ourselves hanging out at Angel's Landing, a gigantic natural stone amphitheater with a running brook, lots of green grass, a pond with a gigantic tadpole, lizards, and a family of turkeys.

The Sanctuary staff strongly encouraged us to join them for lunch at their cafe. "It's korean taco day and only five dollars. You can also get a salad bar and a dessert. You can even get two if you want!", said the staff. So we went.

The food was great...but the best part was eating overlooking the canyon. Simply breathtaking.

When our volunteer time slot arrived, we went into "Dogtown", watched an orientation video, promised not to feed the dog people food (dagnamit...we were going to bring her to McDonalds for an ice cream), was given a foldable bowl, blanket, dog treats, a filled water bottle, and a map of local places to go, and then was asked the most important question.

"Do you want our sweet girl who is really shy and doesn't have a lot of experience but has gone on one outing so far successfully or would you like our black shepherd?". Ollie looked at me and said, "Definitely the shy one".

Her name is Lemonade.

She was a wonderful, sweet, cuddly dog who loved hugs, belly rubs, and being told she is a good girl. She jumped in our car and we took off. Because it was hot and we received a stern warning that it was too hot to walk dogs far and an even sterner warning that Lemonade will not drink out of our portable bowl so we should try to keep her as cool as possible, we decided to bring her back to Angel's Landing for some soft grass time and a photo shoot.

I got a little teary eyed missing Marshmallow, but somehow Lemonade knew and she was extra cuddly. Lemonade wasn't as cute as Marshmallow was, but she sure liked to be hugged much more than Marshmallow did.

Then we took her for a long car ride so she could feel the wind in her face and smell all the smells she wanted to.

Our time limit came up too quickly but we were happy to give Lemonade a big huge A+ for her second outing and let the staff know she was an absolute delight.

If you are ever in the area and have time to stop in and check this place out, you absolutely should. It is a super cool hidden secret and I am so glad we went.

Plus, we saw this cow.

I'm off to sleep now 'cause we have a big day of adventures waiting for us tomorrow. Thanks for coming along with us for the ride and for all your comments and thoughts. You guys make writing this fun and I appreciate you!
